I'm not doing this for my health you know....but I am doing it for the health, safety and freedom of political prisoners who look to us to raise our collective voices on behalf of human rights.
Over the past 13 months, Global Importune has gone through many changes and affected the lives of many victims of human rights abuse in foreign countries. Along the way we have also managed to make our voices heard in America.
Global Importune has:
sponsored a human rights panel detailing the rights and responsibilities of corporations in developing countries at the Academy of Management's Annual Conference in Denver...sponsored several " persecuted writers" campaigns at local bookstores...provided human rights displays and resource materials at libraries...brought Global Importune's "respect for human rights" message to countless community groups, elementary, junior and high schools; as well as college students...distributed our "You are not forgotten this holiday season" political prisoner holiday cards to hundreds of concerned activists....co-sponsored a six-week after school human rights course for inner city high school students in Philadelphia...sponsored a fund raiser to help Burmese Women and Children Refugees living on the Thai-Burma Border...sponsored a local speaking tour for former Amnesty International political prisoner, General Gallardo of Mexico...donated human rights materials to teachers for their classroom..., distributed thousands of pocket-sized copies of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights to mark International Human Rights day, December 10th, generated many favorable articles about human rights in the local press...served as a human rights information clear house for those seeking more information about human rights...sponsored an international human rights case writing competition, and awarded a grant to a Professor to produce a teaching case study of human rights abuse in Mexico and its ties to American corporations.
Now it is time for our toughest challenge, to continue the work. In a previous newsletter, I outlined the materials for the letter signing and mailing process from beginning to end. The cost to Global Importune comes to $2.08 per person per month or $24.96 per year. This doesn't even include the outreach work that Global Importune does.
As a non-profit human rights organization, Global Importune depends upon your private donations to continue its work and we are only able to tackle our ambitious human rights agenda with the assistance of generous supporters like you. Please join with us to help celebrate what we have been able to accomplish, and make it possible for our work to continue. Yes, we still have a lot of work to do.
And yes, that is an actual copy of my EKG chart. If you look closely at the third spike from the left, the next small blip on the immediate right is the one that convinced them to keep me overnight for observation during my heart attack scare of September 2002. But with proper diet, exercise and rest, I. M. O. K. now.
